I refreshed my blog theme (+ some news)

Posted on June 22, 2014

It was about time I refresh the good old theme of my blog! Old, not even responsive. I earned experience with Twitter Bootstrap and responsive web design since then, so I couldn’t leave my blog like this. This is what it used to look like until today:

Ah, it feels better now, right!

I haven’t written on this blog for months, and I miss it. But you know, too busy with the startup life. Talking about it, here are the news about what I’m up to. I write because I need to release it from my heart.

I am not working on Forexagone.com anymore. The ambience was becoming really bad, with conflicts of interest coming from my 2 co-founders, and a workload that was too much unbalanced whereas the profits were still divided into 3 equal shares. The situation was totally locked. I couldn’t develop Forexagone to its full potential without being the sucker in the team, that was so frustrating. I can’t work in these conditions, so better to just let go. I don’t regret this decision. Actually I feel relieved.

My take away from this experience: you gotta choose your co-founders very carefully, like you would choose the person you will marry. Because in both cases, you don’t want to be tied to somebody who’s making your life miserable.

So lesson learned. Last year I decided to go solo and founded My Ladyboy Date as a side project, which has then become the first decent dating site for ladyboys (as we call transgender women in South East Asia — most notably Thailand and Philippines). It is now very popular in the Philippines, which was an easy market due to the fact that Filipinos surf the web mostly in English. And I am now looking at other markets, especially Thailand (there is no country like Thailand when it comes to ladyboys!), and the rest of the world.

This is a very fulfilling activity for me because it’s a profitable business, and at the same time it serves a purpose: providing a quality and decent dating service to a part of the population that was so far forgotten and unfairly stigmatised. Until now, all the dating options for transsexual women were related to prostitution, pornography or libertinage, which is of course unfair, and nourishes wrong stereotypes. I am happy to bring something new and clean to people who need it.

And most of all: no co-founder, so no problem. I haven’t founded anything solo for years, so I was unsure if I could make it, but finally it turned out very well. Actually I am now way more productive and creative than I was when working on Forexagone (at least at the end when the ambience degraded).

I hope I’ll have time to write more about my experience with My Ladyboy Date, how to build a web business solo without wasting too much time, and with the online dating industry which I have already discovered some ups and downs. But I don’t want to make promises I won’t keep, so let’s see how things go!
